Moving house: how do I organise electricity and gas?

On this page
Arrange supply at the new home and the end date at the old one as soon as your moving dates are clear. Confirm electricity and gas separately. If you are moving between Canberra and Queanbeyan, check the actual address because the urgent electricity timing and rebate rules differ across the border.
Power being on during an inspection does not confirm an account in your name. Ask the retailer to confirm the supply dates, account holder, plan and booking reference. Keep those details with your moving checklist so you can follow up if something changes.
Write down the last day you need supply at the old home, including cleaning, and the first day you need it at the new one. Ask the agent or owner which fuels and appliances the new home uses. Have both addresses ready when you book.
What should I organise before moving day?
- Tell your current retailer when you will finish using the old property, including any final cleaning.
- Confirm when you need electricity and, if relevant, gas at the new property.
- Ask whether the new home has an established connection or requires new connection work.
- Check whether the current plan is available at the new address or you need another offer.
- Ask about fees, meter access and any instructions before connection.
- Keep the booking reference and a contact address for the final bill.
The AER advises telling your retailer early and checking readings at both properties against the final and first bills. If it is safe and accessible, record or photograph the reading and date. Use the retailer's process for a meter you cannot read yourself.
Can I keep the same plan?
Ask whether your current plan is available at the new address and what prices and meter requirements apply there. Use the new home’s appliances and expected use in the comparison. Your old bill can help describe your routine, but it cannot predict the cost of a different property.
If the new home uses electric heating instead of gas, ask for a plan comparison that includes its winter electricity needs. If it has solar, confirm the system and metering arrangements and compare import prices with export credits. Get the installed-equipment details from the agent or owner before selecting the plan.
How quickly can ActewAGL connect electricity?
As checked on 13 October 2026, we offer same-day ACT electricity connection for online requests before 3pm and next-business-day NSW electricity connection for online requests before 2pm. Both are subject to our published terms.
| Location | Advertised online timing | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| ACT | Same business day when booked before 3pm | Eligible established residential site, access and connection instructions |
| NSW | Next business day when booked before 2pm | Eligible established residential site, access and connection instructions |
These offers cover electricity. Fees may apply. Unsafe, inaccessible or non-working meters, sites without electricity connected for six months or more, and other published exclusions can prevent the advertised timing. Follow the retailer's instructions and confirm the booking. Book ahead where possible.
What if I need gas or am moving into a new build?
Ask specifically about gas availability and timing. Do not use an electricity connection timeframe as the gas timeframe. Also confirm whether the home actually uses mains gas, bottled LPG or only electricity.
A newly built property may need meters and new connection work. The AER advises contacting a retailer early because these arrangements can take substantially longer than a move into an established property. Ask the builder and retailer who is arranging each part and what is still outstanding.
What should renters and apartment residents check?
Before completing a connection form for an apartment, ask the agent or building manager who will bill you. You may have a direct retailer account or a shared building supply arrangement. Confirm the correct unit address and application route so the booking reaches the right supply.
Confirm the correct unit address and the name for the energy account. A tenant organising supply should also check which appliances belong to the property. Discuss any proposed permanent solar, battery or charger installation with the owner and, where relevant, the owners corporation.
Does moving between Canberra and Queanbeyan change anything?
Check the state or territory of the actual home. ACT and NSW have different rebate rules and ActewAGL's advertised urgent electricity connection timings differ. Tell the retailer about existing concessions or rebates and ask what must be updated or reapplied for at the new address.
For a concession, have the account name, address and current card details ready. A retailer serving both sides of the border does not make an ACT upgrade program available to a NSW property.
What if someone uses life-support equipment?
Contact the retailer before the move and explain the equipment needs and address change. Confirm the registration requirements at the new home and the arrangements with the distributor. If you’re arranging supply with us, read our life-support protections (opens in a new tab) and tell us about the equipment before connection. Existing ActewAGL customers should also keep their contact details and circumstances current.
Registration does not guarantee uninterrupted supply. Discuss an outage action plan with the person's medical team and confirm that plan before relying on the new connection.
What should I check after the move?
When the first bill arrives, check the new address, plan and start date against the booking. Check the old home’s final bill against the recorded end date and reading. If there is a difference, take the booking reference and dates to the relevant retailer.
Use our moving page (opens in a new tab) if you are arranging ActewAGL supply at the new home, whether you already use us or are joining. If another retailer supplies the old home, ask it to close that account on the agreed date and send the final bill.
